Translations

Today we're going to be doing translations. I must add that my vectors look like this: (3)

(4) When the actual ones only have 1 big bracket. This is especially true in the quiz, where they look like this: (3 - 4).

Let's start with this question:

Translate shape X by the vector (3)

(2).

Label your new shape Y.

The vector (3)

(2)

means that we move the shape 3 units to the right (a negative would be left) and 2 units up (a negative here would be down).

We simply take every point's coordinates - e.g. the top left corner, at (-6,-4) and add 3 to -6, and 2 to -4:

. - 6 + 3 = - 3

. - 4 + 2 = - 2

We then get an answer of (-3,-2). This is where this point is on our new shape.

Do this for every point, join them up and label the shape Y - it should look like this:

Make sure your shape has not gotten any bigger - or changed in any way other than being moved! If it has, you've gone wrong.

You can take our quiz below to test yourself on this.
