Similarity: volume

Ok, so now we're going to look at similarity in the volumes of shapes. Let's try a quick question:


These shapes are similar. Find the volume of the larger shape.


Right. First we need to find the length scale factor:


10/4 = 2.5

SF length: x2.5


Now, to get the volume scale factor we have to cube this, since it's in cm3:


2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 = 15.625

SF volume = x15.625


Now we multiply this by the volume of the smaller shape...


6 x 15.625 = 93.75cm3
