Area of a circle

The area of a circle is the amount of space inside it. Here is a question:


Find the area of this circle.


Ok, so first we need to know the formula for the area of a circle:


Area = πr2

Where π is a constant - about 3.142 - and r is the radius of the circle. The radius is the distance between the edge and the centre of the circle.


So the first thing we need to know is the radius. However, only the diameter is shown in the image, so we need to half it to find the radius:


12 divided by 2 = 6


Ok, now we square this:


6 x 6 = 36


And multiply by π:


36π = 113.097cm2
