Right, so we get this question:


Laura buys x apples. James is going to buy twice as many apples as Laura, but he decides to put 3 back. Write a formula for how many apples James buys.


So, ignoring the last bit, if we multiply the apples Laura buys by 2, we should get the apples James is going to buy (originally, before he put 3 back).


So that comes to 2x.


But then we have to account for the 3 he put back.


So how we do this is, we subtract 3 from 2x. Which makes:


2x - 3


So, James buys 2x - 3 apples. Remember, x is the number of apples Laura buys. You can try this yourself with our quiz:
