This is an inequality:
2 < 4
Which means 2 is less than 4. Sometimes, you get inequalities with variables:
x + 9 > 4
And you have to solve them, in much the same way you solve an equation. To get rid of +9, we subtract 9, and the golden rule: what you do to one side, you do to the other!
We subtract 9 from 4, which makes -5. This is our answer:
x > -5
This means x is greater than -5.
