Multiplying fractions

Ok, let's say we're given this question:

Calculate 1/2 x 1/3

First of all, we multiply the numerators (the numbers on top):

1 x 1 = 1

And then the denominators (the numbers on the bottom):

2 x 3 = 6

Now we put our new numerator over our new denominator:

1/6

So 1/2 x 1/3 is 1/6! Some may find this confusing, as they expect the final fraction to be larger, but remember, multiplying by 1/3 is the same as dividing by 3 (and the same with 1/2 and 2).
