Dividing fractions

Hello again! Today we're going to look at dividing fractions. Please note that any mixed numbers will need to be converted to improper fractions first - if you don't know how to do this please see that post beforehand. You also need to know how to multiply fractions before you can divide them. So, we've been given a question:

Divide 1/2 by 6/5

Ok, so what we do is, we take the fraction that's being divided by (6/5) and switch it around - so it's 5/6!

Now, instead of dividing by 6/5, we multiply by 5/6! Please note that you do this even when the backwards fraction (it's called the reciprocal) is an improper fraction.

1/2 x 5/6

Here are my calculations for multiplying them together (if you don't know what I'm talking about please see multiplying fractions):

1 x 5 = 5

2 x 6 = 12

5/12

5 is a prime number, so this cannot be simplified anymore. This is our final answer. You can test your knowledge on this by taking our quick quiz:
