Sometimes we might get a question like this:
Convert 3 1/4 into an improper fraction.
First we multiply the number (3) by the denominator (4):
3 x 4 = 12
Now we place 12 over our original denominator:
12/4
For now, we don't simplify, because we still need to add our fraction on the end: 1/4. It has the same denominator, so all we need to do is add the numerators:
12 + 1 = 13
13/4
So 13/4 is our answer! The basic formula (if you're an algebra person) is:
(# x d + n) / d
Where # = number, d = denominator, and n = numerator.
