Mixed numbers to improper fractions

Sometimes we might get a question like this:

Convert 3 1/4 into an improper fraction.

First we multiply the number (3) by the denominator (4):

3 x 4 = 12

Now we place 12 over our original denominator:

12/4

For now, we don't simplify, because we still need to add our fraction on the end: 1/4. It has the same denominator, so all we need to do is add the numerators:

12 + 1 = 13

13/4

So 13/4 is our answer! The basic formula (if you're an algebra person) is:

(# x d + n) / d

Where # = number, d = denominator, and n = numerator.

I will do another soon on how to convert improper fractions back to mixed numbers! For now, use our quick quiz to test yourself on this:
