Improper fractions to mixed numbers

We've managed to convert mixed numbers to imoproper fractions, so let's try it the other way around. Our question is:

Write 13/6 as a mixed number.

First, we have to split the numberator up into two numbers, and one has to be the Highest Common Multiple of the numerator. This sound complicated, but it really isn't.

The highest multiple of 6 that fits into 13 is 12. So our first number is 12, and the second must be 1, because it's all that's left over. Now we can express these fractions as:

12/6 + 1/6

You might have noticed that 12/6 can be simplified to:

2/1

Also, remember that anything divided by 1 is just the number itself - so 2. This means our new addition is:

2 + 1/6

Which, in fraction terms,. is 2 and 1 6th:

2 1/6.

There's our answer! You can use our quiz to test yourself on this:
