Simple expressions will look something like this:
x(x+9)
More complex ones could have two brackets:
(x+3)(x-2)
For now, let's stick with the simple ones.
We have this question:
Expand and simplify the expression x(x+2).
So, we expand this by multiplying everything OUTSIDE the bracket (x) by everything INSIDE (x+2).
First, we multiply x by x, which equals x2.
Now, x times 2 = 2x.
This comes to x2 + 2x, and there's our answer!
You can also do it like this:
times x +2
x
All you have to do is:
times x +2
x x2 +2x
Equals:
x2 + 2. Same answer!!
Expanding brackets is very simple, and very useful for the more complex process of solving equations. Here is a quick quiz to test your knowledge - please note it contains harder brackets as well, to learn this, go to mathsroar.wixsite.com/maths/post/expanding-double-brackets .
