Calculating percentage increase

So, let's say we're given this question:

Poppy has £6. Her mum gives her an extra £2. Calculate the percentage increase in Poppy's money.

So, we want to know how much Poppy got as a percentage of what she originally had.

To do this, we divide 2 by 6:

2/6 = 0.33" (the " symbol means recurring)

And then multiply by 100:

0.33" x 100 = 33.33" %

So Poppy's money increased by 33.33%.

However, we're going to do a slightly harder one:

Joshua and Verity have 4 children. A year later, they have 5 children. Calculate the percentage increase in Joshua and Verity's children.

To find the percentage increase, we first need to know the increase. In the last question, it told us - £2 - but this one just gives us the final number.

To find the increase in children, we find the difference between 4 and 5:

5 - 4 = 1

Ok, so they had 4 children, and now they have 1 more. Which means:

1/4 = 0.25

And then:

0.25 x 100 = 25%

So they now have 25% more children than they did a year ago. Here is a quick quiz to test yourself:
