Straight-line graphs

Well, suppose we get this question:



Draw the graph of y = x + 3 for the values of x -5 to 2.



Ok, so we know x is the horizontal axis and y is the vertical. We know the values of x, but we need the values of y.


We get these by following the equation: y = x + 3. We take x - say x is 0 - and add 3. Then we get 3. This is y.


We do this for all the values of x, and plot them in a table like this:


x -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2

y -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5


Now we use these values to plot a graph, like this:




Remember, if it's a straight line graph (there are quadratic, cubic and more), your line should always be straight once the points are joined up. If it isn't, you should go back and see where you went wrong.
